【文讀】assignment 1: deadline (10/31)

Write an essay (250-300 words) based on ONE of the following questions:

  1. In Anton Chekhov'e "The Lady with the Dog," what is Gurov's attitude toward his affair with Anna at the outset? What is Anna's attitude? What are some indications that both Gurov and Anna are unprepared for the relationship that develops between them?
  2. in James Joyce's "Araby," how do the first three paragraphs characterize the environment in which the narrator lives?
  3. Discuss the denotation and connotations of the word "fever" in Edith Wharton's short story. How do these layers of connotation contribute to the theme of the story?
  4. In "A Jury of Her Peers," Mrs. Peters is "married to the law" (in the form of her husband the sheriff), whereas Mrs. Hale is married to the farmer who first discovered the murder. In what ways, including dress, speech and manners, action, and attitude, are the two visiting women alike or different? In what ways do they identify with or distance themselves from the absent wife, Mrs. Wright? How and why do the men and women take sides separately or together?
  5. In your experience of reading Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Birth-Mark," do you think that Aylmer's actions are justifiable? Do you admire or disapprove of him? What main ideas--themes--does the author explore?
**** Pay attention to the word count. Late submission within 7 days will receive the 90% discount of grade. Late submission beyond 7 days and less than minimum word count will receive no grade.

After their affair, Gurov sensed that everything was happened normally, for he picked a sliced water-melon at ease. In addition, he felt bored and irritated by Anna’s overwhelming anxiety and comforted her gently. Opposite from Anna’s guilty, Gurov noticed the meaning of his inner perspective by the magnificently surrounding. Unlike the way he bonded relationships with women before, Gurov changed his mind to be profound and searched for the beauty in life until he met Anna.
In comparison, Anna continually defined herself as a “despicable sinner” at the outset. Not only did she beg for forgiveness, but she condemned herself as what she had underwent with Gurov. Furthermore, she explained that she could not suppress the curiosity about men and described her husband as a flunkey. Frankly, Anna seemed to be unfaithful and became a contemptible betrayer in her marriage.
There were lots of struggle indicated. Firstly, as readers, we could tell the extreme personality between them. In the beginning, Gurov’s pursuit was so fierce that she could not endure, and furthermore, Anna held her tolerance and kept reminding him of his arrogance. Second, both of them had devoted to hiding the secret behind. Additionally, the wall built in front of Anna’s house also connoted her dilemma, implied their relationship built too high to be climbed, and revealed their distance could not be broke down. Lastly, Chekhov portrayed the vaguely future plan. Hard as their determination, Gurov and Anna did not figure out a practical solution and not be capable of freeing themselves from the bondage either.

Q4.

At first, Mrs. Peters’ appearance is small and thin, and doesn’t have a strong voice unlike her husband. That’s why in Mrs. Hale’s eyes, she “doesn’t look like a sheriff’s wife”. As for Mrs. Hale’s, even though her appearance isn’t clearly described in the story, we can still know that she’s a genuine and nice person. She accompanies Mrs. Peters to the Wright’s house simply because she’s informed that Mrs. Peters is scared.
As the investigation goes on, Mrs. Hale keeps saying that she’s responsible for this tragedy because, being Minnie Wright’s friends when they were young, she abandoned Minnie for a long time. Hence, we can say that she’s a responsible person, or we can say that her action of hiding the evidence is out of guilt.
Further into the story, all of the characters are looking around the inside of the house, the male characters are oblivious to the domestic stuff, while the two women can sense some strangeness going on in the kitchen. Mrs. Peters being a sheriff’s wife, her insightfulness even points out some of the evidences which tells the reason why Minnie committed the crime. Take the quilt for instance, she notices the weird sewing and her righteousness, at first, does not allow or accept Mrs. Hale to fix it. Maybe it’s why Mrs. Hale says she is not so sure of Mrs. Peters as a person. She thinks that she has that shrinking manner which in my interpretation, suggests that she’s afraid that Mrs. Peters will sell her out and her plan of hiding Minnie’s evidence will fail.
In the end of the story, the men and women are sure that Minnie’s the murderer. The men don’t understand and disregard Minnie’s situation. They just want to put her in jail. Hiding the evidence is out of the two women’s understanding and empathy.

Q4:

Mrs. Peters is a person who married to the law. Being the sheriff's wife, she seems to have a certain duty to make sure that law is justice. Unlike Mrs. Hale, she makes excuses for the men when they put a bad label on women’s housekeeping things. Compare to Mrs. Peters, Mrs. Hale is a person who isn’t afraid to against men and show them her own attitude. On the other hand, Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale has the similarities. They feel that they are similar to Mrs. Wright in the “Women’s Life Way” and that they can understand the Mrs. Wright’s situation because of this. Furthermore, both of them catch the sign under the cruel patriarchal society. It leads them to identify with this poor woman and feels sympathy to her. Moreover, Mrs. Peters feels the same stillness of emotion through the memory of her dead child. Additionally, Mrs. Hale feels guilty that she has never coming to spend time with Mrs. Wright.
During the plot, men make a long distance relationship to women. Men seem to have negative views of women and their status to society. For instance, Mr. Hale says: Oh, well, women are used to worrying over trifles (P.494 L.36) which cause Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale move more closer together. When men focus on the formal but useless evidence, women catches the vital details. The trifles are dramatic irony in this essay and the truth is right lies behind that both women’s affairs and trifles. In the end, women against men by hiding the dead bird that could judge Minnie as a murderer.

Q5:

In my opinion, Aylmer's actions is justifiable, it is based on everyone has his or her own rights to decide. But here are two reasons which shows that why I am disapprove with his action. First, the medicine is very danger to human's body. Second, the appearance is just only the appearance ,the more important is the inner beauty in your heart. However, the birthmark does not hinder something at all, it is that things are determined by your heart .Whatever, this story is at a time when the scientific method was being discovered and people were starting to think about that science really could take us where we wanted to go. I think the author wants to explore and tell people that science really does have its limit and the limitations of human knowledge .Aylmer's actions show us that he ignores the warning signs which urging him to stop. He desire to make Georgina perfect is doomed to failure because perfection. In fact, he does not know that his perfection-inducing potion may doom her to death. The desire for perfection not only kills Georgiana, it also ruins Aylmer because he is desire to create the ideal woman, and her tiny imperfection is all he can see. This story is full of scientific experiments, and it is nature that is shown to be more powerful than any manmade creation. Aylmer has the ability to make lovely sights, but actually ,he doesn’t have the ability to control his wife’s spirit or prolong her life. On the other hand, Georgiana does have some power over Aylmer’s spirit, a power that comes from nature instead of science .In the end, Aylmer’s attempt to control nature with science left only in death and unhappiness.

I couldn’t bring myself to believe that his actions were justifiable. The birthmark, which symbolized the existence of imperfection in human being, couldn’t possibly be worthy of Aylmer risking his wife’s live by conducting an unreliable surgery on her. If he did love her like he had said, he might as well love the birthmark on her cheek. Appearance is merely superficial, what counts the most is a person’s character. If you could see through the imperfection from people’s outside and get to know what they really are, you wouldn’t bother to care about their looks. That’s why I strongly disapproved of him.

The author explored the idea of the foolishness of striving for perfection. Aylmer was so hung up about the birthmark on Georgiana’s cheek that he decided to have her undergone a dangerous surgery that would kill her later. It wasn’t that he didn’t know the risk involved, but he refused to face the music and chose to believe obstinately that any imperfection caused by nature could be deleted by men. And it’s exactly another theme explored by the author: science versus nature. The old Chinese saying, “people can outwit Gods (人定勝天)”, was proven to be wrong by Aylmer’s wild-goose chase. Science can only alter some extent of nature, but it can never remake it entirely at once. We don’t have to pit science against nature, however, there’s one thing everyone has to recognize: Science has its limits. Just look at how nuclear power plant in Fukushima had laid waste to Japan, displacing numerous people and contributed to a massive scale of casualty that had never been seen before since the World War II ended. We can’t ignore the power of nature, though it remains silent when the world of science is bustling.

Q5:
In my opinion, I think Aylmer's actions is not justifiable, Aylmer’s desire to make his wife perfect is doomed to failure because perfection, In fact, the very success of Aylmer’s perfection-inducing potion may doom Georgiana to death. For him, Georgiana’s birthmark symbolizes mortality and sin and comes to tower over Georgiana’s beauty in his mind. He can think of nothing else. According to the narrator, every living thing is flawed in some way, nature’s way of reminding us that every living thing eventually dies. And Aylmer is crazy and selfish, he think human can control the world by his science. He is a smart guy, but his misunderstanding of the symbol on Georgiana’s face causes his mistake. He mistakenly comes to believe that if he can move out this symbol of transience, it will mean that he has the power to prolong life indefinitely. Aylmer also mistakenly believes that the birthmark represents Georgiana’s moral decrepitude and spiritual flaws even though she isn’t a woman tend to sin at all. If anything, the symbol of death on her cheek clashes with her natural generosity and optimistic spirit. I disapprove of him because I believe that nobody is perfect in the world. Everyone have flaws, we should respect each other no matter you like or dislike them. From my perspective, if I were Aylmer, I will concern the birth mark for precious. My wife has the unique hand-shaped mark in the world! And I will encourage her don’t focus on the mark, because if you really love someone you won’t judge by her outlook. Hawthorne uses foreshadowing to illustrate his theme of the foolishness in striving for perfection. Aylmer has a very vivid dream about Georgiana’s birthmark. “He had fancied himself with his servant Amina dab, attempting an operation for the removal of the birthmark; but the deeper went the knife, the deeper sank the hand, until at length its tiny grasp appeared to have caught hold of Georgiana’s heart; whence, however, her husband was inexorably resolved to cut or wrench it away.” Hawthorne illustrates that to attempt to play God, to tamper with nature, can take a turn for the worst.

I don’t think Aylmer's actions are justifiable. I disapprove of him. It is his selfish and arrogant that causes his wife’s dead. He knows that the operation is very dangerous, but his still gives Georgiana the medicine just because he can’t endure the birth mark on Georgina’s face. I think his action is ridiculous. In my opinion, if you can’t accept your lover’s defect, than why you married her? It is very superficial to give your lover your love just because his or hers appearance and money, not because of his or hers heart.

The story happened in 19th century, the time which the “Industrial Revolution” happened. As the progress of technology, People started to think science can do anything, they think they can override the law of nature. But in fact, science has its limitation. It can never replace God the Creator. One of the author’s ideas is that it will be horrible if human thinks that we can conquer everything by science and technology. Aylmer is smart, he wants to use his knowledge to remove the red mark on Georgina’s face, but finally it became a tragic. Georgina dead, Aylmer would live in sorrow and regret later in his lifetime because he killed his wife with his own hand. The story also shows that in that period, woman’s lives are almost control by man. Although Georgina thought her birth mark looks fine on her face on the beginning, she still agreed to let Aylmer remove it in order to please him.

After finished reading The Birth-Mark,I think that Aylmer's actions were not justifiable.I disapprove of him.How could he did such a dangerous surgery on his wife just because of a little birth mark that wasn’t seen clearly on the face.It is really selfish and unthoughtful. The moment I knew that he was trying to use an inappropriate science way to get rid of the birth mark, even though his wife’s life could be sacrifice,I felt very disappoint at him. Aylmer thought that science can fix everything, including his wife’s birth mark. But it was wrong.Even now, people still can’t use science to deal with all the problems. In my opinion, if Aylmer really loves his wife,he should ignore the birth mark and accept her little shortcomings generously. His wife’s inner beauty is way more important than her appearance.I just can’t understand why Aylmer was still felt unsatisfy with Georgiana. There is an old saying that " Don’t judge a book by its cover ."No matter how good-looking a person is,if his or her heart is bad and mean, the appearance just useless. Georgiana is such wonderful as a wife.Due to Aylmer’s dangerous surgery, she dead. What a pity that because of a little birth mark, Georgiana had to lost her life and Aylmer lost a perfect woman .The story lets me feel that woman should have to possess an appearance that man likes. It seems that women are build by men.The birth mark is on Georgiana’s face.It is her right to choose she wanted to do the surgery or not.The story also let me know that persue a perfect thing is good, but when you use a wrong way to get it,it may eventually become a disaster.

The narrative of the environment is also a representation showing what the background the narrator grew up from.At the beginning of the first sentence in paragraph one states"Horth Richmond Street, being blind, was a quiet street except....set the boy free.",and "being blind"which implies the story would be a dead, hopeless end,and the Christian Brothers' School in the street bring a conservative, religious and traditional image to the place."The other house of street, conscious of the decent lives...",which means the people around the narrator is close-minded and conformism.
In the second paragraph, line seven, which mentioned the former tenant,a priest, had died ,and the wild garden behind the house planted a central apple-tree,was to imply this place, the whole environment is very religious. And in the line eight, the narrator found the late tenant's rusty bicycle-pump,and which symbolized the present ,as if the "rusty" pump and the dead kind priest, are also dead.
In the third paragraph, the narrator described the houses in the street were terrible, somber, and damp, and the odours from the garden which signified the society in the past Ireland were dark and not to have a friend environment to the narrator's naive, romantic ideal;yet, despite in this conservative society, the narrator didn't give up his passion to approach the outside world. The somber community where street with stinging cold wind and the foul cottage, formed a strong contrast to the bright areas where light spreaded from the kitchen windows which symbolized new hopes and narrator's longing. The following sentences implied Mangan's sister is not only a symbol of narrator's ideal but a window toward the outside world. The narrator stood on the street staring Mangan's behavior behind the doorstep ,seeing her remaining or going. The light spreading hair and her dress defined her figure, he fell in love with her deeply. The strong feeling of sex and love stired his heart to be confused and motivated his passion.

Gurov’s attitude toward his affair with Anna is just like she is just a tool for him to satisfy his sexual needs. Furthermore, since he was tired of his dulling daily life; he is just taking advantage of this affair to get rid of those bored feelings, and to gain some emotional fulfillment. But it turned out that he was deeply falling in love with her. On the other hand, Anna was dissatisfied with her provincial lifestyles, since she has never gains other people’s attention besides her husband, and had always been obedient to him. So she had look upon the relationship with Gurov as a refreshed opportunity to gain other people’s attention and to live another life.
The first indication is when Gurov couldn’t help but think of Anna wherever he was. Even he placed a lot of efforts to try to absorb in the life of Moscow, he just couldn’t forget her image and all the great memories with her.
What’s more, the second indication is Anna told Gurov that she lived only in the thought of him and was frightened when he came to S to visit her again. Due to the ironic fates that they could only met secretly. She wanted to forget Gurov, for the facts that they have to hide themselves from the crowd, and this kind of life was extremely harsh for them. The third indications is when Anna bursted into tears after she met Gurov once again in the bazaar. She was a bit down in the dumps for she was blissful to see his beloved lover. Nevertheless, she also sadly thought that this love of theirs might come to an end some day.

Q3.
Fever, it means an abnormally high body temperature. We usually think of it is a symptom of illness. In the part two, paragraph 5, Alida considered the love between boy and girl in her youth is as dangerous as Roman Fever in her grandmother’s generation. Indeed, it is true. When it comes to the connotation of fever, it represents a state of nervous excitement, agitation, passion, and desire. In the story, first, fever is love. The love triangle of Alida, Grace, and Delphin is like a fever, short but blazing. It’s roughly happened when Alida engaged to Delphin and disappeared after the day that Grace had a secret rendezvous with her fiancé. Second, fever is desire. Alida envied Grace’s outstanding appearance, the chemical reaction between her and Delphin, and even her daughter! She wanted her daughter brilliant as hers; she wanted her sweetness so Delphin would not like her. The strong longing and worry to Delphin made her fake a letter to lure Grace to the damp, cold arena in that night. Third, fever is combat. To brake Grace’s love to her fiancé, Alida deceived her by a letter in order to let her think that Delphin didn’t care about her. But after so many years, when she saw their daughter, the arena, the anger rose again. She beat her with the truth of the letter while she didn’t know that Grace had already won by her daughter whose father was her husband. Arthur used the word to imply different aspects of the story, the love, the passion, the fight. In the end, it is her own fever to everything made her alive and also sick.

Q5.
I think that Aylmer’s actions are not justifiable. I think if you love one person, you don’t care about his/her appearance, you will love him/her all. Not to mention that Aylmer actually took his wife’s face to experiment. He just wanted to remove the birth-mark on her face, he did not consider this was a big risk surgery and just comforted his wife all will be fine. And I certainly disapprove of him. I think he is a selfish man. In order to satisfy his own desire for knowledge and experiment spirt, he took his wife’s birth-mark to experiment. Maybe he thought all the actions he did was because he loves his wife. But I think that he was wrong, and he made a very thoroughly wrong. I think what he did was not because he loves his wife, all he did was because he wanted to satisfy his own desire for science. That is why his wife would die when he just cares about the birth-mark on her face. And the main ideas the author want to explore is the medium of original offense (Puritanism thought), or fear sexual appetite with suppress, the birthmark of the leading role on the face, represent a person not perfect, or a kind of symbol of original offense.
After I read this article, I also found that there had great gender inequality in 19th century. In 19th century, women rely on men for everything, I think that is why Georgiana could believe Aylmer and put her life to him. They even thought if they married a good man, their life also will be fine. I think this article also have more gender equality issues wait us to explore.

Q1:
In the beginning of the story, Gurov took his affair with Anna as a good acquaintance, since he was tired to get along with his wife, he wanted to take this affair to get rid of his boring life; on the other hand, Anna looked her husband as a flunkey, she wanted to make her life more different than her previous life. Both of them thought the other half just not suitable for themself. After they became a couple of the lovers, Gurov found that he has truly fall in love with Anna, and Anna thought herself became a vulgar and contemptible woman whom any one may despise.
I think there have two points indicate Gurov and Anna were not prepare for the relationship between them. First, In the third part of the story, Gurov wanted to tell someone about his feeling and memory with his affair, but he just can’t. He was wondering that did he really love Anna or not. It seem that he was not prepared for this relationship. Second, the last part of the story, it has directly point out that Gurov and Anna were not prepare to the relationship between them. Generally, when the lovers who can’t meet each other oftenly, they almost be extremely pleasurable to see each other. But Gurov and Anna were not, although they were happy to see each other, they became sadly and distressed afterward. They didn’ t know how to face with this situation. Gurov thought that he was already getting older, but Anna was still a young lady who has deserve a better life; and Anna just been crying constantly, both of them have no idea to their future. So in my opinion, this two points are indicate that Gurov and Anna are not prepare to the relationship between them.

Answer question 5

The author illustrates two main themes in the story: human’s desire of perfection and attempting to control Nature. In the story, Alymer fell in love with a young and beautiful woman, Georgiana, who was so attractive that she had many pursuers. She had outstanding appearance, but there was one thing that Alymer was most care about after they got married, her birthmark. Days by days, the desire for perfection made Alymer ignore his wife’s loveliness. Ridiculously, all he could see is her birthmark, which he regarded as the imperfection of his wife. His mind finally corrupted by the desire of making an ideal woman, so he decided to fulfill his desire, which I think is totally unjustifiable. Alymer’s intention and resentment to her birthmark also influenced Georgiana. To please her husband, Georgiana decided to accept the “treatment” for curing her imperfection. Alymer started to do research and invented potion to remove the birthmark, but he never considered the risk of the experiment. However, Aylmer felled. Though Georgiana’s birthmark disappeared at the end of the story, her life was gone, either. She became too perfect to live in the imperfect world. After I read the story, Mary Shelley’s work, Frankenstein, popped into my head. Both of the characters in the stories believed they can do whatever they want. They were too arrogant to think they can conquer the Nature. And the arrogance eventually led them to tragedy. The unnatural products they created with fantasy became nightmares, and destroyed their beloveds.

Q3;
The ‘fever” has two meanings in the story. On one hand, it refers to malaria, a kind of disease which was prevalent in Rome before the draining of the swamps around the early nineteenth century. The disease comes with high temperature and body sweat. Back in the day, people thought you'd contract the disease from being out at night in secluded areas. So Mrs. Slade wrote the letter, in an attempt to get Mrs. Ansley sick with Roman Fever in the cold night at the Colosseum. On the other hand, the two characters both have the strong desire for love, in fact, for the same man. So the fever also connotes excitement, passion and a kind of jealous. Intense passion in the forms of love, fear, vengefulness, enmity, and jealousy poisons the relationship between Alida Slade and Grace Ansley throughout the story. Grace developed Roman fever figuratively when she fell in love with Alida's husband, Delphin. Alida developed the fever figuratively when Grace's love for Delphin fired her with enmity for Grace and a desire to get revenge by writing the letter. Alida later suffered from complications of the fever when she became intensively jealous of Grace's daughter. Roman fever simmers secretly within both women for the next twenty-five years. From the fever two women got for many years, we can see the immoral relationship and morbid version of love in the upper class. They have nothing in their mind but desire for men in their whole life. It just likes all of them have got the disease, roman fever.

Q4

Although Mrs. Hale’s and Mrs. Peters’ husbands are of different occupations, the two wives actually share plenty of traits alike with each other, and in this story, men and women take on different sides separately because of the stereotypes and discrimination against women. At the beginning, Mrs. Hales and Mrs. Peters barely know each other, but they gradually find out their similarities. Contrast to their husbands, they both don’t have much power and space to speak up their thoughts. Also, they both conform to the traditional gender roles for women, which is to be a good wife in the kitchen and do the housekeeping well, and this is why they can sense out Minnie’s knitting and guess out her dissatisfaction about life. However, Mrs. Hales is somehow more strong-minded than Mrs. Peters, for Mrs. Hales would try to resist things she doesn’t agree to and dares to say something she wants to protest even that would not be accepted. In the story, we can see, at first, Mrs. Peters still wants to obey the laws and present the evidence if Minnie is really the murderer(498/2), until the men come out and mock her for marrying to the law. Minnie Wright also shares similarities with the two wives, but she’s the one who couldn’t bear all the responsibilities and duties that the society unfairly assigns to women and decides to do something as a protest. Men suppose women should do their jobs right without complaining, and even mock their works for being trivial and unimportant. They don’t appreciate women’s work and thinks their own jobs are superior to women. They forget women also have feelings and disrespect women’s individuality, and that’s why Minnie Wright couldn’t stand it anymore to kill her husband. Due to the indifference and scorning that men exert on women, Mrs. Hales and Mrs. Peters finally bond with each other and have their revolution against men, choosing to protect Minnie and her individuality in their own ways.

In Anton Chekhov'e "The Lady with the Dog," Gurov's just like other women like Anna for the beginning. He want to betrayal with Anna.So he decided close to Anna.He used very nice attitude to talk to her. After understanding for Anna, He thought Anna was poor.Because only her one came to a strange environment. Her husband was in another place.
When Anna was meeting Gurov first time, she was shy and with a clam attitude towards his paternity.Anna always showing the lack of experience that uncomfortable feeling and do not awkward state of mind; she gives a panic-stricken impression, as if suddenly someone knocked on the door like a surprise of.She make shy to Gurov.
I think have some indications that both Gurov and Anna are unprepared for the relationship that develops between them.First, when Gurov first time kiss to Anna and went to her hotel room, Anna thought Gurov had not respect her. She felt into a vulgar degrading woman by herself. It was the first time that Anna was apparently not ready to develop their relationship.
Second, when Anna was go out S---, Gurov wanted to forget Anna. But he was not forget her. Instead,he told her memory more deeply. So he decided to go to Anna. But when they were meeting again, Anna was surprise and fear. She was afraid of everyone to seeing them. She wanted to forget Gurov and talking with Gurov they are break up and let him out.We can see that they are not ready to them develops.

From my perspective, I don't think Aylmer's action is justifiable, cause what he have done was so selfish and crazy. In his opinion, science is so powerful that he think everything could be control and change by science, but in the end of th story, he was awfully wrong and fail. Georgiana's birth mark have two different versions, one is positive and the other is negative. It depend on how you look at her birth mark, if you have a grateful and beautiful heart, whatever you see will be wonderful. Obviously, Aylmer don't have such a great heart, so when he looks at her wife's birth mark, he feels shock and refuse to accept, it is why he insist to eliminate it. And his gorgeous wife accept all the suggestion that his mentioned. Longing for Aylmer's recongnition, Georgiana let her husband do a dangerous surgery, with the ambition of her husband, she sacrifice herself in the end. The author chose to make Georgiana such a fool girl I think is to show us the weakness and humble of that period, woman's life are all controlled by men, and also he use the whole story to point out the madness of those scientist. Who eager to control and change what God had given us. Those
perfectionist doing things by fair means or foul, ending up losing everything. Sometimes it is the imperfection that proves how precious each person was. We should regard flaws as special gifts. Pursuing perfection maybe can bring tragedy and sorrow just like the story. Last but not least, I think this story is a very good example of whoever want to reach perfection but do it in a improper way, turned out to be nothing.

Q5:
In my opinion, Aylmer’s actions are not justifiable. Aylmer wanted to remove the birthmark on Georgiana’s face by scientific method. This action is not due to his wife’s willingness and feeling but his own desire. This decision is extremely selfish and crazy, and it changes someone else’s appearance to satisfy his or her desire. For this reason, I disapprove of Aylmer.
This short story, The Birth-Mark, was written in 19TH by Nathaniel Hawthorne. It is a highly developed science century. However, the author wanted to show human’s greedy desire and the attempt to control Nature by this story.
In the story, an eminent scientist, Aylmer, hated Georgiana’s birthmark and tried to remove it after they got married. This horrible thought began soon at the beginning of the marriage. It symbolizes that people acquire scientific knowledge, and then they want more and more. People even believe that their power can change and control everything which comes naturally. Georgiana was a character who had deep grief in the story. She endured her husband’s actions in silence, because of the complete adoration. It is an image of “Mother of the Earth”, which tolerates human to seize and grab quietly. At the end of the story, the birthmark faded from Georgiana’s cheek, and her soul went to heaven at the same time. Aylmer achieved his goal, but lost something more precious.
According to the story, people really can do everything, but it is also a fatal defect of human being concurrently. People pursue endless possibilities, but they ignore what we already have inside the boundary.

Q5.In my opinion, I don’t think Aylmer’s actions are justifiable. So, I also disapprove of him. If you are fascinated a person only for his or her appearance, it is very ridiculous. Everyone will have their ideal types, such as gentle type, macho type, and humorous type. Man like cute, sexy, and tender types. However when we really fall in love with someone, that person maybe is not your ideal type. But there must be a feature that you appreciate, so you love him/her. And not everyone in the world is perfect, we need to accommodate each other's shortcomings and be considerate, that is calling love. But it does not mean that we need to change ourselves to match each other. Some mistakes that we should improve for a better love; however, having a cosmetic surgery for other is the most stupid thing, just like Georgiana eliminated her birthmark for fulfilling her perfectionism husband’s desire . Nowadays, there are more and more abusive relationships in the world, he or she may limit your freedom to install a positioning system on your body, and even imprison you at home for his/her belonging. What a horrible love for a person wants his/her soul and body all belong to oneself. It’s not different to Aylmer for what he had done to his wife. I think the author wants to explore that people have the endless desire for pursuing a wonderful and perfect thing, but we absolutely should not fulfill our desire by any way, or we will ruin everything. And he wants to critical the modern people for pursuing material things, and they think they can overcome the nature is unreasonable.

Q5:
In my opinion, I do not think Aylmer’s actions are justifiable. The real goal of Aylmer is to surpass nature rather than cure his wife. Georgiana’s birthmark gives him a chance to prove that he can do better than nature by repairing the so-called flaw on her left cheek. Aylmer asked Georgiana if she had ever thought that her birthmark could be removed. Georgiana perceived the seriousness of Aylmer’s manner, she became angry and blushed deeply. She had never took her birthmark as a defect, but a charm. However, Aylmer appearently did not buy it, he was so obsessed with removing the birthmark of beautiful Georgiana. Poor Georgiana, the only thing her husband cared about is to get rid of the mark and transform her into the most perfect creature in the whole world like Galatea, the marvelously alluring statue that Pygmalion could ever made. Even though Georgiana knew that if she received Aylmer’s experiments on her, she might be dead, she still accepted the request of her beloved. After Georgiana taking the magical potion, the removal was successful, but the loss of her birthmark was fatal, Georgiana was dying as the crimson faded. I disapprove of Aylmer’s attempt to take the place of nature even transcend so. Here is the question, is perfection achievable? Furthermore, is perfection essential? The last word Georgiana told Aylmer was “Do not repent that, with so high and pure a feeling, you have rejected the best the earth could offer,” the pursuit of perfection in the end inevitably kills Georgiana. Hawthorne tells us that human’s desires have no boundary. There is no need for us to pursue perfect. We do not have to be a perfectionist like Aylmer in the tale.

For question 3:
The denotation of fever is the body of someone turning in unusual high temperature while one has a caught, and the connotation of fever is about desire, passion of sex. It’s because having sex will also let one’s body temperature higher than usual. In generation of Barbara’s grandmother, Roman fever is really a scared disease that who gets it may die. However, in Grace Ansley and Alida Slades’ time, it is used as a kind of warning to prevent girls dating outside with boys. As time flies, Roman fever means nothing to Barbara and Jenny! Roman fever turns from a serious illness to people who enjoy sex. Time have changed, how women eyes are still only their families. It is not enough to compare with each other, they even put their daughters together to compare. Women can have their own career, do what they want to do, not just stay home and do nothing.
I try to think why Edith Wharton used “Roman Fever” as this title of this article. Is it only the meaning of having sex with someone? I don’t think so. Roman Empire declined in Roman fever cause many people died from it. Maybe Edith Wharton choose Roman fever as her title is to symbolize Grace Ansley and Alida Slades’ time had changed such as their concepts, culture and age. Instead of sitting there to memorize their youth and compare with each other, people should look forward, to accept new idea of the age, and try something new.

For the question 5.

First, I think aylmer’s actions are justifiable. Because human always want to change every they don’t accept things, or challenge to prove our limited. In the fiction, he using his scientific knowledge to change Georgiana’s birth-mark.
Second, But I don't agree his doing. Because we all are not perfect. In addition, because these imperfect makes us so different and remarkable. If you want to pursue perfect, then you will become boring. It is not special. Also, in the beginning says, Georgiana is pretty enough. I think he can marry to her, it is lucky to him. Why he wants to change her? Become a “boring” women?
It is cruel to Georgiana.
Last, I think the author want to discuss about our world that we against nature.
The nature is real, is original, is pule. We want to more technology bring to our life, but we damage to the natural environment. Something like excessive cutting of trees, or manufacture a large quantity of carbon dioxide.
What kind of life we want to live? Is good enough to live is okay? Or must be fast and easier to live? Even we reduce the nature way to convince our life?
Are we failed to the “Nature”? Are we forgot where are we born? What’s more important?
Nature? Technology?
In my opinion, I will choose the nature one. If the earth even can’t live, then why we should technology? I think protect nature in our life is more important. This is which we can survive.
The fake tree, how can comparison the hundred years old tree?

Q2
Joyce uses the three feelings: the vision, the sense of hearing and the sense of smell to characterize the environment which the narrator lives. North Richmond Street,”being blind”. Which means is a dead-lined street, people who live in the street are difficult to communicate with the ones outside. At the beginning, Joyce just implies the boy’s love doesn’t have an end and the process is helpless. It also means the residents all live in a self-sufficient lifestyle, they are blind too. Because they don’t have too many desires, just follow the constant way to live. The buildings gazed each other with the imperturbable faces, which imply the people who live in there are just concerned about what related to themselves. Furthermore, inside the house, the air was musty, the book’s pages were curled and damp, even outside the house, the lanes behind the houses were dark and muddy, the garden were dripping and the stables were odorous. Those negative expressions all represent the whole process of pursuing doesn’t have a positive result.
Joyce is not satisfied the religion of Ireland especially the Catholicism. So he put so many connotations in the essay, particularly in the first three paragraphs. The priest was charitable, but he died. It implies the Dublin was as vibrant as the aspiring priest, but in the end, no matter the priest, or the past of Dublin , was all forgot by the resident, just like the rusty bicycle-pump, lost under the bushes. And the apple-tree, represent the Garden of Eden, it forecasts the boy will encounter a difficulty which relates love. To sum up, Joyce leaves so many clues in the expressions of the environment to suggest the follow-up and the background story, I very like it.

Answer for the question 5.
after read 'The Birth-Mark'By Nathaniel Hawthorne. I think Aylmer’s actors aren’t justifiable. In my opinion, If we fall in love with someone, we’ll don’t care about exterior whether his/her beautiful or handsome or not, Like this epigram’ Don’t love someone because of his outstanding physical looks, you love him for his outstanding heart’. And I disapprove of him, I thought he don’t really love or wish well whit his wife and he was talking to convince his wife to take the stigma out. And he said everything to Georgiana accept comments from him, He said to Georgiana if you without The Birth-Mark you’re perfect girl and don’t have any defect. I think because of he just wants to test his invention scientific medicine. And he does not care whether his wife would be harmed with this experimental. So his said that. And I thought if him really love his wife why he not experiment with other treatments first. If it success than took give to his wife. And I think the author want to explore who explored various themes like science versus nature, mortality and marriage through the story of a scientist who was so obsessed with removing a birthmark on his wife’s beautiful face that he ended up killing her with his fixation on absolute perfection. The author stressed that no man could be without flaws and the plot itself and no one can force nature. And in the end I think the author wants to convey whether scientific experiments has both Positive and negative aspects .because Aylmer has made The Birth-Mark on the cheek of Georgiana cured successfully. But she was died.

For question 5:

After reading Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Birth-Mark," I was very shocked and sorrowful for the ending of the story. Without a doubt, I strongly disapprove of Aylmer's actions, thoughts and even attitude. In the story, Aylmer forced Georgiana to remove her birth-mark even though he knew that it might risk her life. To satisfy Aylmer’s desire, not only her birthmark disappeared but also his wife, Georgiana. Here are my reasons to explain why I disapprove of him. First, respect the uniqueness. There is no one can judge other’s appearance. There is no standard of beauty for us to come up to. We all are creature of God and beautiful in different ways. We should be proud of ourselves and respect our uniqueness. Next, what is essential is invisible to the eyes. I think everything has its own value and happens for purpose. Argument makes us more open-minded and acceptive because we know others’ opinions. Hardship makes us stronger and more determined because we prove ourselves we can do it. And even a little freckle may change the definition of beauty. Everything is a gift from life. We should see the value through our hearts not our eyes.
To my opinion, I think that birth-mark is represented as guilt, flaw and imperfection. I know that we all want to be perfect. We all want to be more confident when we see our reflection in the mirror. But if we focus on perfection too much and forget what really matter to us, this kind of thought will lead us to tragedy. We should learn the lesson from the story. Thinking carefully about our attitude toward everything will make our lives even better.

Question No.5

It is not justifiable to kill his own wife for the sake of scientific experiment. Aylmer is the type of person who aim for perfection, while Georgiana’s last words demonstrate that there are no living things perfect. He did not care about her life much, and his keenness of removing the birthmark had already devoured him. He thinks her mole is such an eyesore, and she is just an object for him to do experiment even though he invariably called her “dearest”.
I disapprove of Aylmer’s behavior. His shocking at Georgiana’s imperfection deeply hurt her feelings. He made her feel bad about herself. He got a little bossy and made her sing, making sure she won’t interfere the process. She disobeyed his demand, trying to know the risks she was taking, however, she was called a prying woman. Aylmer have never felt sorry about her death, and he even felt happy about the perfect “work” he had completed. He lost his humanity by doing such insanity.
The main ideas the author explore are the relation between science and nature and people’s aspiration of perfection. Aylmer represents science, while the birthmark represents the nature. The moment he eventually erased Georgiana’s birthmark, he claimed her life as well. The tragic consequence shows we can never conquer the power of nature by using our scientific knowledge. On the other hand, the strong desire of pursuing perfection will make you lose what you already have. Reality is not flawless as fancy, but as we feeling alive, people can still discover the beauty of life.

Q5. I do not think Aylmer's actions are justifiable, it is always wrong for a scientist to kill someone for the sake of science. That said, I do understand why he was so determined. The author points out that Aylmer is a scientist, and that is the one of the reason why he is so eager to get rid of his wife Georgiana's birthmark. Scientist is a post that requires one to be rational and logical at the same time, and the work itself doesn’t allow too much errors. I think these qualities are the fundamental cause of Aylmer's nature of pursuing perfection. This is why he was always constantly thinking about making the birthmark on his wife face disappear.
I do not admire what he did to his wife. For example, he did the experiment even though he clearly knows that the operation will most likely kill his wife. On the other hand, I do admire his pursuit of perfectness and his determination to find the ultimate answer. For instance, the narrator mentioned that Aylmer performed multiple different experiments throughout his career. Most of his experiments did not achieve the goal he set beforehand, but he still continued to carry out different experiments.
What the author is trying to tell the readers is: no one could ever be perfect.
In the story, Aylmer's obsession to pursue perfectness resulted in the death of Georgiana. The main reason of Georgiana's death is because when the birthmark was disappeared from her cheek, she became an ideal being. Which, in the author's opinion, is unreasonable. The author also implies that men cannot cheat the nature, it is possible for Aylmer to create magical stuff from nothing, he still could not control or prolong his wife's life.

Q3
In my opinion, I considered that the denotation in this story just meant a kind of illness, which can make people rise their body temperature up abnormally. However, the connotation was the more important point in this story. The word of “fever” was a symbol that connoted excitement, passion, and desire. And the connotation gave reader a key to find out the secret from Mrs. Ansley. Clearly, through the all plots, we can learn that there was a forever fighting between this two women, Grace Ansley and Alida Slade. In the beginning, author gave Alida a great image. Depicting that she had an outstanding husband, who was a famous corporation lawyer and always with an international case. Instead, Graces husband was very boring in comparison. These descriptions let us view Mrs. Slade as a winner than Mrs. Ansley. However, it was not simple at all until here. Mrs. Slade knew that her friend, Mrs. Ansley, had some special feelings to her groom and she made a plan to revenge her. Despite Mrs. Slade was not deliberate, her friend got “roman fever” and soon got married. Those plot seemed like a simple depicting, however, afterwards giving reader a stupendous surprise! Ultimately, we knew that these two women had their own secrets. And those secrets made their lives forever different and full of twists and turns. In the end of the story, Mrs. Ansley left a strange dialog, “I have Barbara,” and departed.
This was the most important sentence I thought in this story. It gave reader a clue to recognize what happened clearly. Because of Mrs. Slade, Mrs. Ansley got “roman fever”, which included illness and a beautiful night with her admiring man. So “fever” connected all plots and the theme elaborately. I deeply considered that this writing skill using by author was very marvelous.

Q2:

The first sentence has pointed out that this young crazy will not be a good ending. Joyce is also speaks frankly to point out this is the beginning of a dead end: "Richmond street is a dead lane," a house full of musty room, the former priest died and left some books.Yeah! The priest also died. So it's not just a dead lane, there's a dead priest and a yellowed book in the room.
The author began to indicate a dead end with a hopeless, but also a symbol of the boy from the beginning, the eyes can not see the reality, he said the priest left three books appearance were curled and damp. His favorite book is a "The memoirs of Vidocq." but the little boy like him just because it’s "leaves were yellow." It can be said that the boys like the book just because the appearance of the romantic reverie is not the essence of the book content. Not only into the dead end, the teenager's romantic imagination is doomed to the story later development from this romantic blind start.
Only dare to watch in the distance and dare not approached with the goddess of the heart to say a word.
I think the main purpose of the article is to make a strong contrast between the coldness of reality and the romance of fantasy by describing my love experience, life experience, expression of disappointment in the real world of things, romantic disappearance and elusive love.

As a reader,I not only don't think Aylmer's actions are justifiable, but also disapprove of him.In my words,I have two reasons to express my thought. First , once people get into marriage, they should learn how to be inclusive to each other. However,in Aylmer's condition,he didn't learn to be inclusive, but to be a "Boring Man".Compared to Georgiana's heart,he cared her appearance more. The problem between Aylmer and Georgiana is also happening in our society.Lots of people treat those who have special appearance with unfriendly attitude. To me ,I have an painful experience like what Georgiana had suffered.I have a big birth-mark on my head. Some of my old friend were disgusted to it.This made me very uncomfortable.I had even tried to do a surgery to cut it down. But, I had gradually built confidence on myself.

Second , I appreciate his attitude on committing experiment;however, does it meant that he need to do harm on his wife?Undoubtedly, scientists are important to us.Without them, technology may not been improved .Although they made our live more convenient,I still think that scientist should not be so persistent like Aylmer.

The main idea that the author did explore is :All of us are born in unique. We don't need to change ourselves to please anybody.None of us can't force other to be what they want.If Aylmer didn't be a perfectionist, his may not ending in such a miserable way.

Q2:
The first three paragraphs in James Joyce's "Araby" sketch the image of a dark and dull street where the narrator lives.
It's a quiet place where we rarely find out any sound of life except when the boys from the Christian Brothers' School come home in the dismissal time and when the children in the neighborhood gather together after their dinners. That is also a bleak street where the sky turns violet at dusk and below it the street lamps are flickering, and the houses are surrounded by dark morass. It seems to be a sparsely populated place where there are foul smelling horse stables, "the dark dripping gardens" and "an uninhabited house of two storeys" which standing at the blind end.
The story begins in a place where has almost no sound, no light and a bunch of tedious people. Inside the house where the narrator lives in, everything is even more deary and older: a musty room of a died priest, the old book whose covers turns yellow, a lonely tree in the center of the yard and a rusted bicycle pump. We almost can not find any glimmer of hope in such a place like that. The kids there have floundered to find joy in this dark dingy place.
Finally, the street is a religion-tinged space where locates the Christian Brothers' School. The charitable died priest is a symbol of religion, and his death is also the death of nice and bright things there.

In my opinion,I am deeply convinced that everyone has their right to change what they can not accept things. However, anything has its limit .Here I would share my point of view that Aylmer is obsessed with removing Georgiana's birth-mark.,and I don’t approve his action.
First of all, no one is perfect completely,we don't have to remove all the unperfect things from ourselves.Sometimes, those things can make us be different and measure.Additionally,we don’t need to care what other people think of you.
In the second place,Georgiana is so beautiful that plenty of people desire to married with her.Now that she is so beautiful,it's not necessary to remove the "tiny" birth-mark.Even though Georgiana doesn’t want to get rid of the mark, she still accepted the request of her husband. However, "perfect" is often defined by the individual, is a subjective measure, not necessarily all standards; and perfect is endless, "good" will always be "better"; perfect still feel unperfect . Therefore, it is difficult to reach a perfect case, it is easy to worry about the outcome, all day feel anxious.
Last but not least, when Georgiana wants to devote herself to making her husband satisfied.I am deeply convinced that Georgiana loves her husband more than her life. Because, after Georgiana taking the potion, the birth-mark was disappeared. However she also lost her life. It’s so sorrow to me.
In the conclusion, man is a perpetually wanting animal. We absolutely no need to rely on the means of modern science and technology to persure perfection.I think that if people can understand this meaning, our world would be more wonderful.

As far as I am concerned, the two women are totally different. Martha Hale was a farmer’s wife whose identity was as the same as Minnie Wright while Mrs. Peter was a wife of sheriff. At any time, Martha would think of the bad situation that Minnie was in. She would give a lot of sympathy to her and realize what her motive was to express her tolerance. However, Mrs. Peter haven’t experienced the farm’s life so that she couldn’t realize how tedium the life was especially when you were deprived of the things you liked to do. Moreover, Martha Hale was more likely to speak out against injustice, Mrs. Peter was less likely to do so. Martha hid the most powerful evidence---the dead bird when the men came back because she knew how terrible life Minneie had had and her killing of her husband was out of her impulse not the premedidated crime. She was brave enough to stand with her while Mrs. Peter was timid and powerless to fight for the poor Minnie and she just wanted to make this incident judged by the law. Although she chose to conceal the dead bird to help Minnie eventually, in the process she was hesitant to decide what she should do.
Martha has been friends with Minnie since they were all children. She saw her surprising change which made her feel regrettable so that she identify with what she did. Instead, Mrs. Peter didn’t know her until she was sent to the police station. She knew less about Minnie that she thought no matter what happened, everything should be solved by the law and she didn’t agree with what she did.
The men and the women took sides seperately in this story. The man didn’t pay attention to detailed things and thought there were nothing important while the women carefully observed all the surroundings. The women noticed that there were some things undone for Minnie and her quilt with bad sewing. With this details, they could know her changeable mood and to guess why her mood changed. The women always could mind something that the men did not care about.

Aylmer's mind is crazy , his desire for perfection is beyond our knowledge . Even his wife is beautiful , he is still not satisfied . He keeps searching for a better way to fade his wife's birth-mark , to achieve perfect . But perfect is not exist in our world . I am a little sympathy about him , because he is such a romantic person , believe what he want . Although he lost everything . I think the story is talking about how much we can give up to get perfect .
What is the meaning of perfect ? DO we need perfect ? We don't need perfect , what we need is do our best . In the real world , only a few people can get their dream , but we still can't give up living a better life . Because everyone are unique , we are born for some reason .

In the first paragraph, the narrator uses some adjective such as uninhabited and blind to let readers consider this place to be isolated and drab.it seems that this place is less energetic and feel like be haunted. And in first paragraph, a sentence says that “ The other houses of the street, conscious of decent lives within them, gazed at on another with brown imperturbable faces. This seems that the inhabitants in this area, their thought are conservative and they hardly accept some new concepts. So the narrative of the narrator creates a lonesome location to be a setting. It makes the entire story more dramatic. And let the rest of story is interesting to readers. Because the conflict between Richmond Street and Araby is so fascinating for readers. And they counts this two opposite location as a metaphor of two totally different atmosphere, thus makes this story more attractive.

In "The Lady with the Dog" Gurov first attitude toward his affair with Anna is he think that Anna is just like other woman that he having an affair before, that she is a pathetic
“lower race”, but he is also feel pity for her. And on the other hand, Anna think that Gurov will not respect her after what they have done in her hotel room, and she is also feel wrong about that she is having an affair with Gurov, but that feeling of guilty isn’t come out for her loyalty to her marriage, that feeling of her is come from her own moral values. And that’s why I thing they are unprepared for the relationship that develops between them, because the two of them are both try to run away from something, I think that’s why they will be together. For example, (On my opinion) the reason of Gurov having an affair with Anna and other women is because he want to escape from the marriage life with his wife, and Anna is having the same felling with her marriage ,that she despise her husband for being an ass kisser, she feel tired of the marriage life with her husband, that’s why she will come to Yalta, and why they will meet, but as I say, they both doesn’t prepared for the relationship that develops between them, it is because both of them doesn’t expect the relationship between them can be maintain so long, and that’s why Anna left Gurov in the middle of the story. Although she still come back to meet Gurov in the end, but I still can’t imagine that they can have a long-term relationship and a happy life after.
